An age old problem encountered by producers of ceramic ware is the
presence of contaminants on the ware. This dirt, be it from dust in the
atmosphere or from the kiln itself, can easily ruin ware, especially glazed
products. A Fast Fire Ltd ware cleaner can alleviate this problem.
Fast Fire Ltd. produce a range of ware cleaner machines designed for removing dust, small pieces of broken ware or batt and general dirt from ware prior to it entering the kiln. They can be used to clean empty kiln cars, loaded kiln cars or can be fitted directly onto the entrance of the kiln in the case of roller kilns.
For multi-deck cars a recirculating air system is used. An axial fan forces air through jets, across the ware, picking up the dirt. This air is then filtered before being recirculated. The complete jet, fan and filter system traverses along the car automatically (or by a manual signal) by means of a pneumatic ram. This unit has been used successfully on tableware and tile kilns. The kiln car cleaner fitted to the entrance of a tile kiln is particularly effective as it cleans the ware immediately before it enters the kiln.

Another type of kiln car cleaner is for single deck, "skate" type kiln cars. This unit has a rotating brush to loosen the contaminants which is then exhausted through an extraction hood and filtered in a small dust collector. The brush and hood is mounted in a carriage and the control system is such that if any item is left on the car top as it passes under the machine then the carriage is lifted to a safe height by pneumatic rams. An alarm is then activated.
For roller kilns a blower and extraction air system is used. An centrifugal fan forces air through jets, across the ware, picking up the dirt. This air is then extracted by a second centrifugal fan outside the building. The jet is mounted inside a hood which lowers over the ware, the jet then oscillates up and down cleaning the ware. The hood then lifts up and allows the ware to enter the kiln. This unit has been used successfully on a tableware roller kiln. This system is particularly effective as it cleans the ware immediately before it enters the kiln.
