Rotary,
or doughnut kilns are essentially continuous kilns designed for small
areas or for single operator loading and unloading.. The basic principle of this type of
kiln is that the product is loaded onto a rotating hearth which carries the ware
through a circular fire box after which the ware appears ready to be
unloaded at the same place it went in. This type of kiln is particularly
suited to small components such as ferrites, insulators and other
technical ceramics. however the principle has been successfully used for
giftware and tableware. These kilns are almost exclusively
electrically powered and fitted with silicon carbide elements.
The kiln illustrated below is a 72kW electric rotary kiln used to fire samples of a very high precision ceramic component. It has an operating temperature of 1430°C, has 3 control zones and a hearth PCD of 3m. Useful setting area is 125mm wide x 50mm high.
